Press Release: Travertine starts operation of demonstration plant in Upstate New York

Travertine Technologies, Inc., an award-winning start-up scaling a process for carbon-negative, minimal-waste critical element production (the “Travertine Process”), today began operation of its demonstration plant. A formal ribbon cutting marked the event.

The core Travertine Process demonstrated at this plant combines three major unit operations: salt-splitting electrolysis, caustic direct air capture, and mineralization. This process produces sulfuric acid, calcium carbonate, and green hydrogen from waste gypsum and carbon dioxide captured directly from the air.

Sulfuric acid is a critical industrial acid that supports key industries in New York State and across the United States — such as the phosphate fertilizer, LFP battery, and metals refining industries. Calcium carbonate is a solid mineral that can be blended into cement and is a permanent store of carbon. Hydrogen can be used as an industrial fuel or for making products such as fertilizer.

This first-of-a-kind (FOAK) Travertine Process facility uses commercial-scale equipment and is a key step in scaling up the Travertine Process to world-scale plants. The demonstration plant will produce 125 tonnes per year of sulfuric acid, 125 tonnes per year of calcium carbonate, and 55 tonnes per year of gross carbon dioxide sequestration.

“This demo plant is an exciting next step as we scale up the core Travertine Process. Our process can be used for a number of vital industrial applications, including using our sulfuric acid to produce phosphoric acid for the fertilizer and LFP battery industries with our proprietary phosphoric acid production process,” said Laura Lammers, PhD, founder and CEO of Travertine. “What is unique about Travertine is that we enable carbon-negative critical chemical production without making mineral by-products that need to be landfilled.”

The demonstration plant will supply sustainable, fossil-free sulfuric acid for local partner Sabin Metal Corporation’s precious metals recycling and refining business. Future expansion could supply green hydrogen to replace natural gas for high-temperature industrial heat.

Their approach can generate durable carbon removal credits while producing valuable co-products like sulfuric acid, which can be used to make fertilizers and extract critical minerals,” said Giana Amador, executive director of the Carbon Removal Alliance. “Innovative approaches like this are how we will grow carbon removal to meet our climate goals and provide tangible benefits for existing industries and communities across the U.S.”

This project is supported by New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) with $3.2M in grant funding for the plant buildout. The new facility is also supported with $7.5M in funding from Builders Vision.

Alberta wildfires stopped near key oilsands sulphur facilities

The immediate threat to Canadian sulphur supply from the Alberta oilsands has eased, after several large wildfires in the Lac la Biche region were classified as “being held” with the help of rainfall in early June. The region has a combined annual sulphur production capacity of nearly 3 million t/a. Around 700,000 t/a of this is produced in the Edmonton area, primarily from Shell’s Scotford upgrader (580,000 t/a) and the Redwater refinery (130,000 t/a). The majority of the output, approximately 2.2 million t/a, is concentrated further north near Fort McMurray at facilities operated by Suncor, Syncrude, and CNRL Horizon. The out-of-control fires prompted evacuation alerts near in-situ sites operated by Cenovus, Canadian Natural Resources, and ConocoPhillips. While this specific threat has passed, the event highlights the seasonal vulnerability of Canadian sulphur supply, with the wildfire season typically running through the summer.

Travertine processes Ariane phosphate samples

Arianne Phosphate has provided samples of its phosphate concentrate for processing at Travertine’s facility in Boulder, Colorado, US. Pilot scale testing was successfully performed, demonstrating proof of concept on the process and production of a high-quality purified phosphoric acid (PPA). The Travertine process captures and recycles over 95% of the sulphur used in the process of making PPA, providing a virtually closed loop system. The PPA produced using the process met specifications required for both LFP batteries as well as fertilizers. The companies have begun work to advance the PPA demonstration plant in Quebec’s Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, working with potential partners as well as end-users of the product.

Yara acquires Gulf Coast Ammonia plant

Yara International has reached an agreement to acquire Gulf Coast Ammonia’s (GCA) ammonia production facility in Texas City, Texas from GCA Holdings LLC, for a consideration of $ 1.3 billion. Yara says that the acquisition is part of its strategy to diversify its energy exposure and enhance the competitiveness of its global ammonia production footprint. Yara will own the ammonia plant with an expected nameplate capacity of 1.3 million t/a, with Air Products supplying industrial gases to Yara as part of a long-term supply agreement. Yara will use its midstream ammonia platform to supply both external customers and its own internal sourcing needs.
