Poland, Hungary team up on green hydrogen and ammonia

Hydrogen Poland and the Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Association (HHTA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on hydrogen regulations and green ammonia production across Central Europe, according to media reports.

A key ambition of the partnership is the creation of a regional subsidy scheme for green hydrogen producers, potentially modelled on the national auction frameworks that Spain, Lithuania and Austria have already established under the European Commission’s Auction-as-a-Service (Aaas) scheme.

The two bodies also plan to develop a supply chain framework for green ammonia and push for changes to EU rules governing renewable hydrogen production, which have drawn widespread criticism from industry.

The announcement coincided with a bilateral agreement between Poland and Japan that would give Polish developers access to Japanese ammonia technology, with a view to building new green ammonia trade corridors in the region. Both organisations said the initiatives were partly driven by the energy supply disruption stemming from the Middle East conflict.
