Hy2gen’s Albatros wins EU Hydrogen Bank support

Written by Natalie Noor-Drugan

Hy2gen Nordic’s Albatros renewable hydrogen project in Kassø, Denmark, has secured support from the European Hydrogen Bank. The project centres on a 100 MW RFNBO electrolyser aimed at industrial demand in Germany and across Europe. It will feed hydrogen into the planned Danish German Hydrogen Backbone pipeline.

The plant is designed to produce about 14,400 t/y of renewable hydrogen. Over its first ten years, output is expected to total roughly 144,000 tonnes. Hy2gen estimates cumulative emissions savings at around 986,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

Albatros was selected through the European Hydrogen Bank’s auction with a bid of €0.97/kg. This is one of the more competitive premiums in the round. The project will receive €139.8 million in production linked support over its first decade. The fixed premium is intended to narrow the cost gap between renewable hydrogen and conventional alternatives. It will also help German industrial users meet RFNBO sub quotas under RED III. Construction is scheduled to start in 2028, with operations from 2031.

The Kassø site sits in a major Danish renewables hub. Albatros is designed to connect Danish renewable power directly to industrial demand in Germany and into the wider European hydrogen network. Hy2gen says the project will support decarbonisation in hard to abate sectors and strengthen Europe’s energy security by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Hy2gen Nordic Managing Director Hege Økland said the project aims to deliver renewable hydrogen into Germany “at the lowest possible prices” to help industrial customers comply with EU renewable hydrogen mandates. She also highlighted Kassø and Aabenraa as a modern industrial hub for green growth. CEO Cyril Dufau Sansot said Albatros expands Hy2gen’s portfolio of “renewable molecules” and shows the importance of cross border hydrogen infrastructure in Europe’s energy transition.

Hy2gen AG, based in Wiesbaden, reports an electrolysis pipeline of about 3.4 GW in planning and construction and a further 15 GW in development. It focuses on RFNBO hydrogen and derivatives for shipping, aviation, chemicals, fertilizer and steel. The company has raised €200 million in 2022 and a further €47 million in 2025 to fund its projects.
