INPEX begins blue ammonia production 

INPEX Corp says that it has begun ammonia production at its demonstration project in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata, and has also begun supplying the ammonia to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. (MGC). INPEX says that the project is the first in Japan to integrate the entire low carbon hydrogen and ammonia value chain, from production to utilisation.

Feedstock for the project is natural gas from the Minami-Nagaoka gas field, operated by INPEX in Nagaoka City. The CO₂ generated as a by-product during the ammonia production process is re-injected into a sub-surface reservoir in the Hirai area of the field, where gas production has already ceased, as part of a carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) initiative.
