Arianne Phosphate says that the government of Canada has approved contribution funding of up to C$735,000 to support the company’s ongoing work on processing phosphate rock and optimising its purified phosphoric acid (PPA) process. The funding, provided through Natural Resources Canada’s Critical Minerals Research, Development and Demonstration programme, is part of a C$80.3 million investment announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney to help build secure critical minerals supply chains in Canada. Phosphate was added to the Canadian critical mineral list in 2024. Arianne’s Lac à Paul project is the only fully permitted phosphate mine in the country. Arianne is now actively pursuing opportunities for the downstream production of PPA, a necessary ingredient for lithium-iron-phosphate batteries.
The Mosaic Company has sold its Mosaic Potash Carlsbad business in New Mexico to newly-formed company International Minerals Carlsbad for $30 million.
Potash and phosphate have been added to the updated 2025 List of Critical Minerals published in the US Federal Register on 6th November.
CSV Midstream Solutions says that it has successfully completed commissioning and commenced operations at its Albright gas plant in northern Alberta, tapping into the Montney shale gas field. The new 150 million scf/d sour gas plant with associated sulphur recovery represents the first of its kind to be built in Alberta in more than a generation.
Arianne Phosphates has signed a memorandum of understanding with Travertine Technologies Inc.for the production of purified phosphoric acid using Travertine’s proprietary process on high-purity phosphate concentrate from Arianne’s planned Lac à Paul project in Quebec Province.
CSV Midstream Solutions says that startup of the Albright gas plant in Alberta is likely to be delayed due to issues with the sulphur recovery plant. Commissioninf began in June 2025, with expectations of full-scale operations to commence in July 2025. However, a faulty valve at the SRU has necessitated a root cause analysis for its failure. The plant will process 150 million cfd of sour gas once operational.
Upcycle Minerals Inc. has launched a brine to potassium sulphate fertilizer with carbon capture project in south-central Saskatchewan. The company says that it plans to use its mineral assets, including the Tuxford potash mineral permit and the Whiteshore and Lydden Lake Alkali Leases as feedstock for its patented process. Along with the production of potassium sulphate (SoP), the process also generates two co-products with established markets; ammonium sulphate fertilizer and precipitated calcium carbonate. Upcycle says that it intends to become an ecologically conscious, low-cost producer of SoP with low net CO2 emissions.
Sulphur output in North America continues to decline due to refinery closures and conversions at the same time that acid demand is increasing for metals processing projects.
S&P has raised its 10-year production outlook for the Canadian oil sands. The latest forecast expects oil sands production to reach a record annual average production of 3.5 million bbl/d in 2025 (5% higher than 2024) and exceed 3.9 million bbl/d by 2030; half a million barrels per day higher than 2024. The 2030 projection is 100,000 bbl/d (or nearly 3%) higher than the previous outlook. Despite a lower oil price environment, the analysis attributes the increased projection to favourable economics, as producers continue to focus on maximising existing assets through investments in optimisation and efficiency. While large up-front, out-of-pocket expenditures over multiple years are required to bring online new oil sands projects, once completed, projects enjoy relatively low breakeven prices.
