Daewoo finishes Indorama’s third Nigerian fertilizer train on schedule

Written by Natalie Noor-Drugan

South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction has completed Indorama’s third fertilizer plant in Nigeria on schedule, reinforcing the contractor’s long running push into African nitrogen capacity.

Daewoo said in a 12 June announcement that it has finished the “Indorama Fertilizer III Project” near Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for Indorama’s Nigerian subsidiary, IF FZE (Indorama Fertilizer Free Zone Enterprise). The project adds a third ammonia–urea train to the existing Indorama complex, with capacity of about 2,300 t/day of ammonia and 4,000 t/day of urea and urea fertilizer. Contract value is reported at roughly $265 million, excluding VAT.

Construction started in October 2023 and ran for about 32 months through May 2026, with Daewoo stressing that key commissioning milestones – including first gas feed, first ammonia and first urea – were achieved ahead of plan. Korean business media quoting the company noted that the third train was delivered “in line with the original schedule”, underlining Daewoo’s execution record in large scale fertilizer plants in Nigeria over more than four decades.

Located close to Port Harcourt, the new unit forms part of Indorama’s strategy to expand nitrogen output for both domestic supply and exports, leveraging local natural gas feedstock. Daewoo said it is already in talks with the client over potential follow on work, aiming to use the Train 3 delivery as a springboard for additional LNG, refining and fertilizer projects in the region.
