thyssenkrupp uhde technology EnviNox - Covestro Baytown

Press Release: Major emissions reduction initiative: thyssenkrupp Uhde delivers EnviNOx® technology to Covestro Baytown site

  • Multiple installations for Covestro

  • Combined secondary and tertiary abatement for highest efficiency in N2O reduction

thyssenkrupp Uhde has successfully delivered and commissioned its proprietary EnviNOx® technology to Covestro’s Baytown, Texas, facility. The advanced emission control system plays a central role in Covestro’s Nitric Acid Unit Climate Initiative (NAUCI), equating to an annual abatement of approximately 154,000 metric tons of CO2e (CO2 equivalents). This underscores the growing demand for effective, turnkey solutions that directly address industrial emissions.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde: “Reducing greenhouse gases from industrial production is one of the fastest and most impactful ways to cut emissions. We are proud to support Covestro’s strong climate commitments once more with proven technology that delivers measurable results and minimizes emissions.”

“It’s projects such as NAUCI that will help us achieve our ambitious emissions reduction targets in the long-term, and I am confident that our continued efforts will drive even greater success as we work towards achieving climate neutrality by 2035,” said Victor Ortega, Baytown site manager and senior vice president of Performance Materials and Operations North America.

thyssenkrupp Uhde’s EnviNOx® system has already been successfully implemented at multiple Covestro facilities worldwide, including its Shanghai site, which has also seen drastic emissions reductions thanks to this collaboration. The Baytown installation reaffirms both companies’ commitment to sustainable industrial transformation. Here, the EnviNOx® solution was integrated into the tail gas system of the nitric acid production process (tertiary abatement) by combining tail gas treatment with an additional N2O reduction measure implemented below the ammonia oxidation gauzes (secondary abatement).

Proven, versatile and effective

The EnviNOx® system can eliminate up to 99% of nitrous oxide (N2O) and other nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions generated during nitric acid production, but also in other large-scale chemical processes like caprolactam or adipic acid production, or ammonia cracking. With more than 20 years of operational success and over 60 units installed worldwide, EnviNOx® has already eliminated over 260 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions in total, offering one of the most effective tools available for industrial climate action. It is designed for long-term operational efficiency, minimal maintenance, and compliance with the most stringent environmental regulations. As a tertiary abatement system, it can easily be installed in the tail gas system, fully delivered and supported by thyssenkrupp Uhde’s technology experts.

Hazardous area certifications for wall mountable analysers

In other news, AMETEK says that its 993X series of analysers, encompassing the 993X and 9933, are now ATEX and IECEx Zones 1 and 2, and ETL (North America) Class I Division 2 compliant for use in hazardous locations with ambient temperature up to +60ºC. Built with IP66 rated enclosures, the 993X analysers can be installed outdoors, or in minimally temperature-controlled enclosures, reducing both capital and operating costs.

Challenges in the conversion to clean ammonia

VK Arora of KPI examines the technical and operational challenges of decarbonising legacy and new ammonia plants, drawing on a European case study of full-scale conversion supported by robust process and integration design. It also presents three US case studies exploring partial strategies, such as green hydrogen blending and oxygen enrichment, to reduce CO2 emissions and improve throughput. Together, these examples highlight a phased, cost-effective approach to decarbonisation, with blue hydrogen serving as a near-term transitional feedstock.
