Casale has signed a process design package (PDP) contract with Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co for two new fertilizer plants. These are being commissioned by Turkmenhimiya, Turkmenistan’s state-owned chemical company, as part of a production complex in Turkmenaba, the country’s second-largest city.
The S.A. Nyyazov Chemical Plant in Turkmenabat produced 115,850 tonnes of sulfuric acid during the first five months of this year, according to local press reports. The plant also produced 11,297 tonnes of mineral fertilizers over the same period, including 5,227 tonnes of nitrogen-based and 6,070 tonnes of phosphorus-based fertilizers. The Turkmenistan government recently approved the construction of a new plant at the facility to produce 350,000 t/a of superphosphate and 100,000 t/a of ammonium sulphate. South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. has been awarded the EPC contract for the plant.

The European Commission (EC) says it has begun tracking European imports of certain ethylene and ammonia products, to allow it to react quickly to level the playing field if the monitoring points to a surge of imports causing or threatening to cause injury to the EU industry. This surveillance has been put in place in response to evidence of a significant and potentially injurious increase in the EU market share of imports of the chemicals. It covers imports of copolymers of ethylene and alpha olefin, urea containing more than 45% (by weight) of nitrogen, and ammonium sulphate from all countries, and should remain in place for a period of three years.
As a tumultuous 2024 draws to a close, CRU’s fertilizer team to make a few predictions for the year ahead.
Continuing growth in Chinese ammonium sulphate production is leading to a continuing flood of exports, as greater awareness of the utility of sulphur as a fertilizer leads to increasing global demand.
China’s acid production continues to grow as new smelters come on-stream. But high domestic demand from phosphate production as export restrictions are lifted and a shortage of copper concentrate may limit the potential for acid exports.
TOYO has a long history in urea granulation technologies and has recently added two new technologies to its product line-up.
Honeywell UOP’s nViro Hydro process provides an alternative solution to conventional hydroprocessing waste treatment. Benefits include creating a new revenue stream and reduced capital outlays, operating expenses and water use.
