    CMA-CGM adds methanol-ready vessel

    Written by Beatrice Bedeschi

French shipping giant CMA CGM has added its fifth methanol-ready vessel to its fleet as part of a wider $20 billion renewal programme. The CMA CMG Gold vessel has a capacity of 13,000 TEU, and is part of an expansion focused on alternative fuels such as biomethanol and e-methanol, with the company aiming to eventually add 12 methanol-ready vessels to its fleet. By 2031, the company expects to operate around 200 container ships capable of using low-carbon energies.

The company inaugurated its first dual-fuel methanol vessel, the CMA CGM Iron in July 2026, when it completed the first bunkering of bioethanol for a deep-sea container ship at the Port of Santos in Brazil. The vessel is equipped with the world’s first tri-fuel engine, the Everllence G95ME-C10.5-LGIM, capable of burning bioethanol, green methanol, and conventional marine gas oil (MGO).
